The\u00a0Large Harbor Monument\u00a0is one of two harbor-style monument types available in RUST that players can find along the map\u2019s coastlines. It first appeared in May of 2016 in\u00a0Devblog 111\u00a0as concept art and was initially designed to be an easy-to-spot navigation point for fresh spawn players. Its large crane towers help break the skyline and draw players\u2019 attention to the monument. Since its initial release, this monument has become a mainstay of the early game wipe cycle.<\/p>\n
This guide provides detailed information about the RUST Large Harbor Monument, enabling you to identify basic facts quickly and helping you to prepare, access, and successfully run the monument while providing insight into the different types of loot, NPCs, and environmental variables you may encounter.<\/p>\n
The game\u2019s visual translation of this monument is much like one would expect. It takes the shape of a three-pier port with an outer water-bound cargo moving pier and a connecting swing span bridge system, complete with large cranes, ample buildings and structures for all your storage needs, large hangers, and flatbed trucks. Between the piers and towards the bounds of the outer warehouse pier, players will potentially find two Tugboats.<\/p>\n
Much like its counterpart, the Small Harbor, the Large Harbor monument is populated with loot in a less-than-consistent manner.\u00a0Barrels, in particular, can spawn in numerous places and, at times, be quite difficult to track down. Boxes and crates, on the other hand, are more consistent in their placement yet sporadic in their spawn rate.<\/p>\n
Depending on the population of the server being played, the Large Harbor can appear to the untrained eye to be quite sparse in resources or an absolute treasure trove to those who are persistent in searching or know where to look.<\/p>\n
Preparing for the Large Harbor Monument
\nThe Large Harbor monument was previously viewed as a preferable alternative to the Small Harbor amongst veteran RUST players regarding recycling locations after Cargoship or Oil Rig runs but has since been dethroned as the go-to harbor of choice. Both monuments now have comparable, semi-safe recycler locations, offsetting this previous bias.\u00a0 The appearance of a RHIB docked near the ladder closest to the recycler is almost always a sure sign that it is unsafe to venture towards.<\/p>\n
That being said, the Large Harbor is completely void of hazards such as radiation or scientists (when Cargo Ship isn\u2019t docked) and has an assortment of light switches that pulse for easier visibility that can be turned on at night for limited lighting. Regardless of gear level or experience, any RUST player can enter the Large Harbor completely naked and loot its vast treasures.<\/p>\n
Large Harbor is an excellent monument for acquiring a bit of early game scrap and provisions but is typically heavily frequented, especially early in a wipe, due to its easy-to-acquire Blue Keycard that players need to complete harder puzzles.<\/p>\n

Running the Large Harbor Monument
\nNon-Pier Areas
\nUnderground Train Tunnel Entrance<\/p>\n
Large Harbor has an underground train tunnel terminal near the recycler area, set apart by a chain link fence.\u00a0It borders the ocean, standing slightly apart from the rest of the monument.\u00a0You can check out more information about this from our January 8th update back in 2021.<\/p>\n
Blue Keycard Puzzle<\/p>\n
Almost directly in the center of the monument is the Blue Keycard puzzle.\u00a0Unlike the Small Harbor, this puzzle is in two separate buildings instead of a single one.\u00a0Running in line with four small forklifts, players will find a small shack with a switch on the outside and a sparking fuse box on the inside.<\/p>\n
Once an Electric Fuse is placed, players must flip the switch, then head straight out the door, between a 6-wheeled truck and two large fuel tanks.<\/p>\n
Just past the fuel tanks is another small building with a (now) glowing green keypad.\u00a0Swiping a Green Keycard will grant access to this otherwise locked door.<\/p>\n
The small locked building has crates, and a Blue Keycard is found on the desk. Early in the wipe, this is a highly contested, heavily farmed item.<\/p>\n
Empty Corner Trailer<\/p>\n
Caddy corner to both the Train entrance and Recycler is a small, often empty, ugly trailer with a large D11 painted on the side of it.\u00a0This building can house a single box or possibly someone with a gun.\u00a0Enter at your own risk.<\/p>\n
Recycler<\/p>\n
Across from the Underground Train Tunnel Entrance is a large gray building with oversized garage doors. On the side is written \u201cShipping.\u201d<\/p>\n
Working your way around this building, located in a courtyard surrounded by chain link fencing,\u00a0you will find the sole recycler and telephone at this monument.\u00a0While inside the building is inaccessible, several small palettes, a non-functioning train car, and other assorted obstacles can be used as cover.<\/p>\n
Strategically, this area offers little protection for those using the phone or recycler but is slightly easier to defend from than Small Harbor\u2019s recycler. Beware that the walls have cracks that can be shot through, and the chain-link fence is fairly mesh.<\/p>\n
Inland Shipping Crates<\/p>\n
Across the street from the underground rail network entrance are several stacked, partially opened, and accessible shipping containers along the most inland wall to the monument. These shipping containers can contain quite a few barrels and one or two crates ranging from standard brown to green military-in type. They can be quite claustrophobic and provide excellent cover for ne\u2019er-do-wells looking to cause mischief and steal your loot. Check your corners carefully.<\/p>\n
Train Loading Hanger<\/p>\n
Opposite the recycler is the train loading hanger, one of the monument\u2019s largest features. The stationary train car here can house up to two crates, and barrels can spawn under the awning in several places.\u00a0 Hiding places aren\u2019t abundant here, but that doesn\u2019t mean it can\u2019t happen.\u00a0Exercise caution when checking for loot.<\/p>\n
4 Propane Tanks \/ Double Stack Shipping Trailer<\/p>\n
While relatively void of crates (small chance in the trailer), the propane tank area fenced in just next to the train loading hanger can have a good amount of red barrels spawn in or around it.\u00a0The area is an ideal grub camp, with the potential for tall grassy areas to hide in, depending on the map seed.<\/p>\n
Pier Areas
\nPier 1<\/p>\n
Working our way from the Recycler area onward, we start with what we will call Pier 1.\u00a0This pier is drastically altered from the base monument, incorporating a Swing Span Bridge and replacing much of its original features with various vehicles.\u00a0Present now are 4 large trucks, 4 tractor trailers, 1 fueling tanker trailer, and 2 flatbed trucks.\u00a0The road from the mainland now extends right up to the swing bridge.\u00a0A small pier drop at the end was used to better accommodate the swing bridge feature, as well as a small inaccessible utility shack added for ambiance.<\/p>\n
Pier 2<\/p>\n
The next pier combines two original iteration piers turned into one large concrete structure attached to the concrete area that houses the Blue keycard room. This pier connects to Pier 3 with a concrete inlet that is lower in height.\u00a0The Tugboat that originally spawned off this pier\u2019s end has since been moved to the outermost water-bound pier.<\/p>\n
Aside from the unchanged center blue keycard area, there is a telephone pole network running the road-based course of the pier, a small waterfront utility shed that can spawn a crate, and three inaccessible stacked shipping containers.<\/p>\n
Small Oil Refinery Inlet (Between Piers 2 & 3)<\/p>\n
Wedged between Pier 2 and 3 on an inland pier with a sunken inlet, players will find access to a Small Oil Refinery.\u00a0On fresh wipe, this refinery will come pre-loaded with 100 pieces of Wood until someone uses it or removes it. It is common practice, particularly because of the abundance of red fuel barrels, for players to load up this refinery and cook Crude Oil into Low Grade Fuel as they go.<\/p>\n
Because of the nature of RUST, anyone can access this refinery, meaning that using it does not guarantee that someone won\u2019t steal it. This could be viewed in PVP terms as a good place to camp.\u00a0Caution advised.<\/p>\n
Pier 3<\/p>\n
The final pier is shaped like a large L, not overly abundant in crates but having many barrels along its waterfront edging.\u00a0A large bumblebee-colored crane overhangs the water, as well as a single floating barge between the L-shaped protrusion. The barge houses a single shipping container that is open to the public and can have a crate and barrels onboard. The Tugboat that originally spawned off this pier\u2019s end has since been moved to the outermost water-bound pier.<\/p>\n
Pier 4 (Tugboats)<\/p>\n
Coming as a fresh addition circa 2024, the new outer floating pier is an island unto itself. It is segregated from the original Large Harbor area by the aforementioned Swing Span Bridge, but is reachable via other means such as boat or swimming across. This area packs quite a lot into a rather small area, so we will fragment the newer content into subsections to adequately break down the new content and the new dangers players checking it out will face.<\/p>\n
Pier Junkpile<\/p>\n
As you venture onto the new pier area, you\u2019re immediately greeted by an unusually large amount of junk for a non-junkyard monument. The area appears to have hastily thrown together defensive features that are no longer in operation, including Outpost-level turrets on a broken-down truck and a newer-looking bulldozer.<\/p>\n
There is a functional bumblebee-colored crane towards the back toward the water that will move containers around when the Cargo Ship event takes place. There is very little loot to be found in this area, with crates and barrels scattered sparsely amongst the garbage. A small sunken pier area with two concrete staircases was also added for boat docking.<\/p>\n
The Junk Wall & Path Through<\/p>\n
By now, you find yourself facing quite a wall of junk\u2014literally. While possibly intimidating, especially at night, we will include the fastest method through this area. Players be advised that this is an ideal camping spot for other players interested in picking off spectators wanting to see new content. There is no shortage of wonderful places to hide in wait and quite a few ways to escape once the deed is done. Be on your guard when moving through this labyrinth.<\/p>\n
Central Loading Pier (1 Tugboat)<\/p>\n
At the halfway mark of the new pier, we come to the dock\u2019s loading portion, with functional new cranes that load and unload loot when the Cargo Ship event occurs. The area has very few lootable crates and barrels, with minor exceptions. The real appeal of the area is the chalked-off squares.<\/p>\n
On the ground, there are large white chalked squares that read Cargo Drop Off.\u00a0When the Cargo Ship docks, two large red shipping containers appear on these spots.\u00a0 These shipping crates have openable doors that players may use to sneak into and hide.\u00a0 The large crane beside this pier will pick these boxes up and load them onto the Cargo Ship.\u00a0 This adds a new dimension to sneaking onto cargo with a new, virtually silent method.\u00a0 Alternatively, we guess you could jump onto it from the dock, but where\u2019s the fun in that?<\/p>\n
Smaller Wall<\/p>\n
Once again, we find ourselves looking at more junk and another wall.\u00a0This one is less of a maze than the first, with considerably more loot.\u00a0While probably being removed in the future, the bright yellow barrels shown in the image are the ways up and down that players can take to progress through this mini-maze.\u00a0 There aren\u2019t quite as many places to hide as there were with the first wall, but you should still be on guard when moving through and looting.\u00a0Beware of the barbed wire spools, as they will damage players that touch them.<\/p>\n
Backlot (1 Tugboat)<\/p>\n
