\nThe in-game server browser is where most players start, and for good reason. It gives you a full view of available servers, lets you compare options, and makes it easy to jump in without extra commands.<\/p>\n

\nStep 3: Searching & Filtering<\/p>\n
With tens of thousands of RUST servers available, filtering makes this screen usable for players trying to find the right server to join. While there are many options here to use, the primary functions you\u2019ll find yourself using across official and community servers are:<\/p>\n
Search Bar: Allows text strings to be entered and searched, such as a server title or a keyword found in a server\u2019s title.
\nGame Mode: Sort and filter by the servers set to a specific game mode, such as vanilla, Hardcore, Softcore, Primitive, etc.
\nPlayer Count: Sort and filter by the number of players present on a server. Higher population servers will have more PvP and competition, while lower population servers will have less PvP and more relaxed gameplay.
\nPing: Sort and filter based on servers with a ping (latency) at a certain level. Generally, you want to aim for servers with consistently lower pings, generally under 100 ms, so that your gameplay is smooth.

\nRoleplay: Sort and filter servers that are designed with structured rules that allow players to take on roles, have select jobs, player as characters, or even join factions built around story-driven play styles.
\nBuild Server: Sort and filter servers designed exclusively as creative servers, with unlimited resources, no upkeep, and instant building tools. Typically modded to allow players to practice their building skills without the RUST grind.
\nCombat Training: Sort and filter by sandbox-based servers that enable players to practice building their aim and PvP skills, with loadout kits and instant respawns available.

\nThe in-game F1 console is a fast alternative to connecting directly to a RUST server if you know the server\u2019s IP address. This method is useful when a friend shares a server IP address with you directly, or when the server isn\u2019t showing up in the server browser.<\/p>\n
Note: This method skips the server browser altogether and is also used by admins to join locally hosted RUST servers, as they typically won\u2019t appear in the server browser without extra work.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Open the F1 Console<\/p>\n
While the game is open, press the \u201cF1\u201d key to open the in-game console. This will open a special interface that lets you interact using typed commands. The blue bar at the bottom lets you type and edit.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Enter the Connect Command<\/p>\n
You will need to type or paste in the following command:<\/p>\n
client.connect IP:PORT

3. Join Using In-Game Favorited Servers
\nIf you play on the same RUST server often, saving it as a favorite in RUST is the easiest way to get back in without searching every time.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Select the RUST Game<\/p>\n
At the top right of the server browser dialog, there will be a drop-down list labeled \u201cSelect Game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Click on the drop-down list, scroll down, and select \u201cRUST\u201d from the available options.<\/p>\n
Step 3: Search and Filter Servers<\/p>\n
In the bottom left of the dialog, there is a \u201cChange Filters\u201d button that will display the search and filter functions needed to locate the server you wish to play on. As you type or select functions, your list of RUST servers will narrow down.<\/p>\n
Step 4: Select Server to Join<\/p>\n
Once you have narrowed your search and your server title appears in the list, click on the title to highlight it.<\/p>\n
Next, click the \u201cConnect\u201d button in the bottom-right corner of the dialog to join that server. This will open RUST if it isn\u2019t already open, and automatically connect to that server.<\/p>\n
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
\nWhen attempting to connect to a RUST server, there is always a chance of an error occurring. The trick is being able to troubleshoot your way through what\u2019s going on. Here are some of the most common connection issues to watch for.<\/p>\n
1. Connection Failed
\nThis is one of the most common errors RUST players see when connecting to a server. Typically, it means:<\/p>\n
The server may be offline or in the middle of a reboot.
\nYour game client\u2019s version doesn\u2019t match the server\u2019s version.
\nAs a player, you can first verify that the server is online. Then, if it is and you\u2019re still experiencing the issue, exit RUST and restart your Steam client to force a download of any pending updates. Then attempt to connect again.<\/p>\n
2. EAC: Authentication Timed Out
\nThis error is from Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and usually means that something has failed during the authentication process.<\/p>\n
As a player, you may have missing or corrupted files that are causing EAC to stall during authentication. You\u2019ll want to verify your game files using Steam. Once you\u2019ve run through the verification process for RUST and the erroneous files have been fixed, you can attempt to reconnect.<\/p>\n

3. Server is Full

\n1. Join Using the In-Game Server Browser
\nThe in-game server browser is where most players start, and for good reason. It gives you a full view of available servers, lets you compare options, and makes it easy to jump in without extra commands.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Launch the Game & Navigate to Server Browser<\/p>\n
From the main RUST menu, click the \u201cPlay\u201d button. This will open the server browser, where all available servers are listed with default filters applied.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Understanding the Server Type Tabs<\/p>\n
At the top of your server browser, you will see several tabs, each representing a different type of server.<\/p>\n
Official: Displays typically high-population, stable servers hosted by Facepunch or their partners. These are generally the \u201cvanilla\u201d version of the game, with no third-party gameplay-altering modifications.

\nStep 3: Searching & Filtering<\/p>\n
With tens of thousands of RUST servers available, filtering makes this screen usable for players trying to find the right server to join. While there are many options here to use, the primary functions you\u2019ll find yourself using across official and community servers are:<\/p>\n
Search Bar: Allows text strings to be entered and searched, such as a server title or a keyword found in a server\u2019s title.
\nGame Mode: Sort and filter by the servers set to a specific game mode, such as vanilla, Hardcore, Softcore, Primitive, etc.
\nPlayer Count: Sort and filter by the number of players present on a server. Higher population servers will have more PvP and competition, while lower population servers will have less PvP and more relaxed gameplay.
\nPing: Sort and filter based on servers with a ping (latency) at a certain level. Generally, you want to aim for servers with consistently lower pings, generally under 100 ms, so that your gameplay is smooth.
\nWipe Schedule: Sort and filter based on how often a server resets its map and\/or blueprints, with three options: weekly, biweekly, and monthly.
\nRegion: Sort and filter based on the server\u2019s physical location. You will generally want to choose locations closest to you to reduce ping and improve your connection stability.
\nFor modded servers, you have many of the same options above, but there are a few additional filters provided to find specific game-styles, such as:<\/p>\n
PVE: Sort and filter by Player vs. Environment servers, more focused on environmental survival, base building, fighting AI enemies without player conflict.
\nMinigame: Sort and filter servers that have fast, repeatable game modes like arenas, gun games, parkour, or other challenges.
\nRoleplay: Sort and filter servers that are designed with structured rules that allow players to take on roles, have select jobs, player as characters, or even join factions built around story-driven play styles.
\nBuild Server: Sort and filter servers designed exclusively as creative servers, with unlimited resources, no upkeep, and instant building tools. Typically modded to allow players to practice their building skills without the RUST grind.
\nCombat Training: Sort and filter by sandbox-based servers that enable players to practice building their aim and PvP skills, with loadout kits and instant respawns available.
\nBattlefield: Sort and filter by servers with loadout kits, vehicles, and continuous combat. These servers are designed to be action-packed, minimizing downtime.
\nBattle Royale: Sort and filter by servers where players spawn in, gear up quickly, and fight until only one player remains.

2. Join Using the In-Game F1 Console
\nThe in-game F1 console is a fast alternative to connecting directly to a RUST server if you know the server\u2019s IP address. This method is useful when a friend shares a server IP address with you directly, or when the server isn\u2019t showing up in the server browser.<\/p>\n
Note: This method skips the server browser altogether and is also used by admins to join locally hosted RUST servers, as they typically won\u2019t appear in the server browser without extra work.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Open the F1 Console<\/p>\n
While the game is open, press the \u201cF1\u201d key to open the in-game console. This will open a special interface that lets you interact using typed commands. The blue bar at the bottom lets you type and edit.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Enter the Connect Command<\/p>\n
You will need to type or paste in the following command:<\/p>\n
client.connect IP:PORT
\nHere\u2019s an example that connects to the Corrosion Hour server:<\/p>\n

\nThis command requires the server\u2019s IPv4 address and the configured game port to connect. The default game port for RUST servers is 28015, but it could be different for the server you\u2019re attempting to join.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Initiate Connection<\/p>\n
Now press the \u201cEnter\u201d key to initiate the connection.<\/p>\n
3. Join Using In-Game Favorited Servers
\nIf you play on the same RUST server often, saving it as a favorite in RUST is the easiest way to get back in without searching every time.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Add a Server In-Game
\nOpen the game, then click the \u201cPlay\u201d button to open the server browser.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Locate Your Server<\/p>\n
Now you will need to search and filter the results to find the server you wish to favorite.<\/p>\n

Note: There\u2019s an alternative method available, where you can also access the Steam Overlay while RUST is open by pressing the \u201cShift\u201d + \u201cTab\u201d keys together. In that scenario, the server browser will be near the bottom of your screen.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Select the RUST Game<\/p>\n
At the top right of the server browser dialog, there will be a drop-down list labeled \u201cSelect Game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Click on the drop-down list, scroll down, and select \u201cRUST\u201d from the available options.<\/p>\n
Step 3: Search and Filter Servers<\/p>\n
In the bottom left of the dialog, there is a \u201cChange Filters\u201d button that will display the search and filter functions needed to locate the server you wish to play on. As you type or select functions, your list of RUST servers will narrow down.<\/p>\n
Step 4: Select Server to Join<\/p>\n
Once you have narrowed your search and your server title appears in the list, click on the title to highlight it.<\/p>\n
Next, click the \u201cConnect\u201d button in the bottom-right corner of the dialog to join that server. This will open RUST if it isn\u2019t already open, and automatically connect to that server.<\/p>\n
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
\nWhen attempting to connect to a RUST server, there is always a chance of an error occurring. The trick is being able to troubleshoot your way through what\u2019s going on. Here are some of the most common connection issues to watch for.<\/p>\n
1. Connection Failed
\nThis is one of the most common errors RUST players see when connecting to a server. Typically, it means:<\/p>\n
The server may be offline or in the middle of a reboot.
\nYour game client\u2019s version doesn\u2019t match the server\u2019s version.
\nAs a player, you can first verify that the server is online. Then, if it is and you\u2019re still experiencing the issue, exit RUST and restart your Steam client to force a download of any pending updates. Then attempt to connect again.<\/p>\n
2. EAC: Authentication Timed Out
\nThis error is from Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and usually means that something has failed during the authentication process.<\/p>\n
As a player, you may have missing or corrupted files that are causing EAC to stall during authentication. You\u2019ll want to verify your game files using Steam. Once you\u2019ve run through the verification process for RUST and the erroneous files have been fixed, you can attempt to reconnect.<\/p>\n
If verifying the game did not work, make sure to restart the Steam client entirely to check for any pending client updates.<\/p>\n
3. Server is Full

\n1. Join Using the In-Game Server Browser
\nThe in-game server browser is where most players start, and for good reason. It gives you a full view of available servers, lets you compare options, and makes it easy to jump in without extra commands.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Launch the Game & Navigate to Server Browser<\/p>\n
From the main RUST menu, click the \u201cPlay\u201d button. This will open the server browser, where all available servers are listed with default filters applied.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Understanding the Server Type Tabs<\/p>\n
At the top of your server browser, you will see several tabs, each representing a different type of server.<\/p>\n
Official: Displays typically high-population, stable servers hosted by Facepunch or their partners. These are generally the \u201cvanilla\u201d version of the game, with no third-party gameplay-altering modifications.
\nCommunity: Displays player-hosted servers bound to an unmodded experience; typically provides a vanilla version of the game, with only built-in server convars and custom topography maps allowed, no third-party gameplay-altering modifications.
\nModded: Displays player-hosted servers with custom plugins and modified game experiences. These can be anything from custom arenas, 2x+ loot, teleporting, kits, and many more.
\nFriends: Displays servers your Steam friends are currently playing on, and can contain a mixture of any of the three types of servers available.
\nFavourited: Displays servers you have favorited in the server browser itself so that you have a quick look-up list to reference.
\nHistory: Displays past servers you have connected to, providing a quick look-up list to reference.

With tens of thousands of RUST servers available, filtering makes this screen usable for players trying to find the right server to join. While there are many options here to use, the primary functions you\u2019ll find yourself using across official and community servers are:<\/p>\n

\nGame Mode: Sort and filter by the servers set to a specific game mode, such as vanilla, Hardcore, Softcore, Primitive, etc.
\nPlayer Count: Sort and filter by the number of players present on a server. Higher population servers will have more PvP and competition, while lower population servers will have less PvP and more relaxed gameplay.
\nPing: Sort and filter based on servers with a ping (latency) at a certain level. Generally, you want to aim for servers with consistently lower pings, generally under 100 ms, so that your gameplay is smooth.
\nWipe Schedule: Sort and filter based on how often a server resets its map and\/or blueprints, with three options: weekly, biweekly, and monthly.
\nRegion: Sort and filter based on the server\u2019s physical location. You will generally want to choose locations closest to you to reduce ping and improve your connection stability.
\nFor modded servers, you have many of the same options above, but there are a few additional filters provided to find specific game-styles, such as:<\/p>\n
PVE: Sort and filter by Player vs. Environment servers, more focused on environmental survival, base building, fighting AI enemies without player conflict.
\nMinigame: Sort and filter servers that have fast, repeatable game modes like arenas, gun games, parkour, or other challenges.
\nRoleplay: Sort and filter servers that are designed with structured rules that allow players to take on roles, have select jobs, player as characters, or even join factions built around story-driven play styles.
\nBuild Server: Sort and filter servers designed exclusively as creative servers, with unlimited resources, no upkeep, and instant building tools. Typically modded to allow players to practice their building skills without the RUST grind.
\nCombat Training: Sort and filter by sandbox-based servers that enable players to practice building their aim and PvP skills, with loadout kits and instant respawns available.
\nBattlefield: Sort and filter by servers with loadout kits, vehicles, and continuous combat. These servers are designed to be action-packed, minimizing downtime.
\nBattle Royale: Sort and filter by servers where players spawn in, gear up quickly, and fight until only one player remains.
\nStep 4: Select a Server to Join<\/p>\n
Once you\u2019ve determined your server type, game style, and any additional filters, you simply need to click on the server of choice.<\/p>\n

2. Join Using the In-Game F1 Console
\nThe in-game F1 console is a fast alternative to connecting directly to a RUST server if you know the server\u2019s IP address. This method is useful when a friend shares a server IP address with you directly, or when the server isn\u2019t showing up in the server browser.<\/p>\n
Note: This method skips the server browser altogether and is also used by admins to join locally hosted RUST servers, as they typically won\u2019t appear in the server browser without extra work.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Open the F1 Console<\/p>\n
While the game is open, press the \u201cF1\u201d key to open the in-game console. This will open a special interface that lets you interact using typed commands. The blue bar at the bottom lets you type and edit.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Enter the Connect Command<\/p>\n
You will need to type or paste in the following command:<\/p>\n

\nThis command requires the server\u2019s IPv4 address and the configured game port to connect. The default game port for RUST servers is 28015, but it could be different for the server you\u2019re attempting to join.<\/p>\n
Note: You can also use the shorthand version connect IP:PORT, but know that this command is name-spaced under Client commands.<\/p>\n
Step 3: Initiate Connection<\/p>\n
Now press the \u201cEnter\u201d key to initiate the connection.<\/p>\n
3. Join Using In-Game Favorited Servers
\nIf you play on the same RUST server often, saving it as a favorite in RUST is the easiest way to get back in without searching every time.<\/p>\n
Step 1: Add a Server In-Game
\nOpen the game, then click the \u201cPlay\u201d button to open the server browser.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Locate Your Server<\/p>\n
Now you will need to search and filter the results to find the server you wish to favorite.<\/p>\n
Step 3: Add it to Favorites List<\/p>\n
Once the server you\u2019re looking for is visible in the server listing, click on the \u2b50(star) icon next to its title. This will add the server to your \u201cFavorites\u201d list, so you can quickly find it later.<\/p>\n
4. Join Using Steam\u2019s Game Servers List
\nIf you already know the server you want to join or just prefer using Steam\u2019s tools, you can connect to a RUST server directly through Steam\u2019s built-in server browser. This method of joining a RUST server has a few advantages that other methods do not provide, such as:<\/p>\n

\nStep 1: Open Steam\u2019s Server Browser<\/p>\n
You will need to open the Steam application, then click the \u201cView\u201d tab in the top menu, and then select the \u201cGame Servers\u201d option. This will open a dialog window.<\/p>\n
Note: There\u2019s an alternative method available, where you can also access the Steam Overlay while RUST is open by pressing the \u201cShift\u201d + \u201cTab\u201d keys together. In that scenario, the server browser will be near the bottom of your screen.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Select the RUST Game<\/p>\n
At the top right of the server browser dialog, there will be a drop-down list labeled \u201cSelect Game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Click on the drop-down list, scroll down, and select \u201cRUST\u201d from the available options.<\/p>\n
Step 3: Search and Filter Servers<\/p>\n
In the bottom left of the dialog, there is a \u201cChange Filters\u201d button that will display the search and filter functions needed to locate the server you wish to play on. As you type or select functions, your list of RUST servers will narrow down.<\/p>\n
Step 4: Select Server to Join<\/p>\n
Once you have narrowed your search and your server title appears in the list, click on the title to highlight it.<\/p>\n
Next, click the \u201cConnect\u201d button in the bottom-right corner of the dialog to join that server. This will open RUST if it isn\u2019t already open, and automatically connect to that server.<\/p>\n
Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues
\nWhen attempting to connect to a RUST server, there is always a chance of an error occurring. The trick is being able to troubleshoot your way through what\u2019s going on. Here are some of the most common connection issues to watch for.<\/p>\n
1. Connection Failed
\nThis is one of the most common errors RUST players see when connecting to a server. Typically, it means:<\/p>\n
The server may be offline or in the middle of a reboot.
\nYour game client\u2019s version doesn\u2019t match the server\u2019s version.
\nAs a player, you can first verify that the server is online. Then, if it is and you\u2019re still experiencing the issue, exit RUST and restart your Steam client to force a download of any pending updates. Then attempt to connect again.<\/p>\n
2. EAC: Authentication Timed Out
\nThis error is from Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and usually means that something has failed during the authentication process.<\/p>\n
As a player, you may have missing or corrupted files that are causing EAC to stall during authentication. You\u2019ll want to verify your game files using Steam. Once you\u2019ve run through the verification process for RUST and the erroneous files have been fixed, you can attempt to reconnect.<\/p>\n
If verifying the game did not work, make sure to restart the Steam client entirely to check for any pending client updates.<\/p>\n
3. Server is Full
\nSo this happens, and people don\u2019t always catch on quickly.<\/p>\n
For some servers, you\u2019ll be placed into a queue, and your position is determined by when you joined in relation to the players ahead of you. The best you can do here is wait it out, look to see if there\u2019s a skip-the-queue option, or find another server to play on.<\/p>\n
